Shopping For Dog Training Collars

girlofgumbo asked:

I hit a dog with my car today. I slammed on my breaks and tried to avoid it while it ran out in front of me. I don't think the dog lives at this house as I have never seen it in the neighborhood before. There was a little girl playing in the yard with it. After I ran over the dog -- I stopped the car, got out, the dog miraculously had gotten up hobbled off to the side of the road and laid down. The little girl ran in the house to get someone. A man came out and went to the dog looking at him and picking him up. I was amazed that the dog did not squeal or start biting. I asked the guy if he wanted help carrying him. I asked the guy if he wanted me to call a vet. The man muttered that he didn't have any money to even take the dog to a vet. Conveniently... I thought. I noticed he didn't have any money to buy a collar for the dog either.

What should I have done? I couldn't avoid the dog. I'm afraid this guy with "no money" is going to sue me or something. What should I do?
When the man picked up the dog he immediately said the dog's leg was broken. How did he know that. He wasn't a vet.

Choice of the most effective type of dog training collar for your personal training goals is only step one. In addition, you need to make sure it's the correct size and that you understand the way to use it correctly. Even the best collar may not be suitable if it is not utilized correctly.

Varieties of Dog Training Collars

Dog training collars include prong collars, head halters, choke collars, electronic collars. Dog harnesses and standard dog collars work fine for their designed purpose, however aren't viewed as "training collars" and so won't be included in this article.

Prong collars have the look of something from a medieval torture chamber that would be quite unpleasant. Used properly, these are pretty humane. Prong dog training collars were to begin with constructed from metallic prongs linked with one another in chain fashion. Nowadays they're also available constructed from plastic which is recommended by many. These collars control the dog by slightly "pinching" the neck when the handler pulls on the lead. If applied over aggressively, they can injure so care is needed.

Head halters like the Haiti and Gentle Leader halters look like and work in a manner similar to harnesses for horses. They work by directing the dogs' path. The dogs' body naturally follows the head and a harness does an exceptionally good job of controlling the head. Even though they might appear to be overly restrictive, the dog easily becomes accustomed to them. They are particularly helpful in curbing aggressive dogs.

Choke collars remain popular and are also suggested for use in numerous 4H dog training programs despite the debate around their use. Used correctly, they are suitable dog training collars, but they are very easy to misuse. When they are placed on the dog incorrectly, if links become twisted or if an excess of force is used by the handler, they can, indeed, become tools of torture. For me personally, I discontinued using choke collars a long time ago and will never return to them. You will find so many much better dog training collars available.

Electronic dog collars are intended to give the dog a slight shock upon command from the handler. The severeness can be modified from a slight buzz or tingle to get the dogs' attention to a more serious jolt. These shouldn't be used on small or timid dogs and only after discussion of your situation with a professional dog trainer. Shock collars could easily cause harm to your dog if used carelessly.

Whatever your individual needs, you can find the ideal collar from the wide selection of dog training collars available on the internet. Take a few momemts to browse our website and change your demanding dog into an enjoyable, nicely socialized pet.

This is such a heart-breaking story. I don’t think they will seek “revenge” but if they do, you should call the police. It is possible that they may ask you to pay the vet bills. That’s why you have insurance on your car. If they ask for that, just call your insurance company and let them handle it. It’s important that you are cordial to them and respectful of the fact that you just injured their pet.

you are not at fault. He can’t sue you unless you drove over his lawn to hit the dog. Well he can TRY, but he won’t win that one. forget about it. shoulda had a leash on the dog.

Your not to blame at all. Actually, you can sue the owner of the dog for damages to your car.

The dog id their responsibility. It should always be on a leash, or in a fenced in yard.

Dog Collars And Leashes

I would go over and say how truly sorry you are and ask if you can give any assistence. From a legal perspective, you are completely fine being the dog was not on leash and not in a fence. From a moral perspective, you should try to do what you can for the dog, not so much for the family.

Sounds like it was not your fault. You tried to stop. The owner had his pet running free. You did all you could. I doubt that revenge is on his mind.

I think you handled the situation as well as you could. Maybe if you’re feeling bad about this (which it kind of sounds like you are), you can get them a card, and maybe a plant or something and take it to them at their house.

At least you tried to reach out. A LOT of people wouldn’t have even stopped. Don’t beat yourself up about this. Accidents happen.

Check with your state. Usually there is a “Leash Law” which means the dog should not have been roaming free so it is not your fault that it ran out in front of you.

It is tragic and Im sure you feel really bad but you did the right thing by stopping and trying to help.

I wouldnt worry but if he does try something he wont have a case due to the leash law.

Good luck

I think you did all you can. You stopped and you offered your help. I worry about what his plans for the dog were though, if he had a broken leg and no money for a vet. (yikes!)

People who can’t care for their animals shouldn’t have them.

Dog Collars And Leashes

You can not be held responsible for a free running dog,
the owner is the one that is responsible. My daughter’s
dog was hit by a car and killed a couple of weeks ago,
the lady that hit the dog feels just absolutely terrible about
it (as I am sure that you do) but the fact is her dog got
out of the yard and was running down the street, right smack
in the path. My daughter contacted the lady and told her
that she knew it wasn’t her fault and that she had no hard
feelings towards her.

I would contact the owner and tell him that you will pay the
Vet bill, also check with you auto insurance to see if they
will pay under your liability coverage.

Good luck

I’m sure you feel bad about the incident, otherwise you would not have stopped and offered assistance.
If the man with “no money” attempts to sue you, I don’t think he would have a leg to stand on.
And think about the way it could have happened…You swerve to avoid his dog, cause a major accident. The dog should have been leashed or tied up to where he would not be put in harm’s danger. You did not cause it, you were just in the wrong place at the wrong time, Stop being hard on yourself:)

Well, this is horrible. I know you did not hurt the dog on purpose. If I were you, I would go and file a police report. State what happened, where it happened, your conversation with the man and the fact that the dog was outside with a minor with no collar or leash on it. That way if the guy does try to come back to you, you will have the police report showing that you did the right thing by reporting the accident. I dont think this goes against your insurance, however it is something you can use as backup for a complete record of what happened and when in case he tries to sue you or something down the line from now. It seems to me that the child should have been being looked after as well. Good luck.

You should offer to pay for the vet bill. You seem to be more concerned about yourself than the poor animal you hit.
