How do I teach my dog?
Thursday, May 14th, 2009 at
SayWhat YouNeed ToSay asked:
...good leash behavior? She's a small dog, so I must admit we weren't too concerned about leash pulling. But now we're planning on certifying her as a therapy dog once she hits a year (she's 8 months), so good leash behavior is a must.
I have a harness for her, the kind that goes around her chest and neck. I don't want to use a prong or choke collar. Any tips on teaching her to walk nicely on the leash? Thanks.

I would suggest using on of those halties, they go around your dogs head and you can effectively control them. Just make sure you dont tug to hard
Dog Harnesses
Just start walking her on the leash, repetition that’s the best way to teach any dog anything. Make her stay where she is supposed to be for a few steps and then let her go her way for a little while. When she understands what is going on she will walk close to you.

Gentle Leaders are awesome!
Fancy Dog Collars
I’d try a halti, or gentle leader, take your dog to the pet store to be fitted properly and see a trainer to learn how to use it properly. The dog may paw at it just because it does not like it but ignore this behaviour and keep the dog moving to avoide it.
never leave a halti on a dog unsupervized.
Use ir properly and no hard tugging.
good luck
use praise when the dog does not pull and treats.
good luck

I would get a retractable leash. Start with a short lead, and then gradually get longer. Whenever she pulls, pull her back and say a command, of your choice, very firmly. when she pulls very hard pull her back and stop. Stand there with her for about 2 minutes and keep repeating the same command. Like: NO PULL!
Therapy dogs are great!
Good Luck!
