Jay Z asked:

My mother has recently bought an electric dog collar home and i have been skeptical at best whether to put it on my dog. I have a very small dog, so i figured what way better than to test it on myself first before my poor thing. I was told it has 7 settings...to me it seemed to have just 1, and it entailed alot of pain, more than a dog should experience. It is a simple enough collar working on the vibration of sound, and I am not sure how to turn the intensity down. Please help! I dont want to hurt my dog and I refuse to put it on my dog until the intensity is bearable for me.

Custom Dog Collars

Choice of the best type of dog training collar for your personal training objectives is only the first step. You also need to make sure it's the proper size and that you know how to use it properly. Even the very best collar may not be appropriate if it is not employed properly.

Kinds of Dog Training Collars

Dog training collars include prong collars, head halters, choke collars, electronic collars. Dog harnesses and ordinary pet collars work fine for their intended purpose, however are not considered "training collars" thus will not be covered here.

Prong collars possess the look of a thing from a medieval torture chamber that might be pretty unpleasant. Used properly, these are pretty humane. Prong dog training collars were at first made from metallic prongs linked to one another in chain fashion. These days they're also offered made out of plastic material that is preferred by many. These collars control the dog by slightly "pinching" the neck when the handler pulls on the lead. If applied over aggressively, they're able to cause pain so care should be used.

Head halters like the Haiti and Gentle Leader halters look like and operate in a fashion much like harnesses for horses. They function by guiding the dogs' path. The dogs' body naturally follows the head and a harness really does an exceptionally good job of controlling the head. Whilst they might look to be overly restrictive, the dog quickly gets accustomed to them. They are particularly helpful in handling aggressive dogs.

Choke collars continue to be popular and are also suggested for use in numerous 4H dog training programs notwithstanding the debate around their use. Utilized properly, they are good dog training collars, however they are easy to misuse. When they are put on the dog incorrectly, if links come to be twisted or if too much pressure is used by the handler, they can, indeed, become devices of torture. Personally, I ceased using choke collars a long time ago and will never go back to them. There are many far better dog training collars out there.

Electronic dog collars are made to give the dog a small shock upon command of the handler. The intensity can be fine-tuned from a minor buzz or tingle to get the dogs' attention to a more severe jolt. These shouldn't be used on tiny or fearful dogs and only following discussion of your situation with a reputable trainer. Shock collars could easily hurt your dog if used carelessly.

wow… i applaud you for standing up for your dog in saying it won’t be on the poor pup till you can ‘tolerate’ it.

Assuming the collar is for barking, have you tried a quick spray in the face with a water bottle to stop unwanted barking? I would try every method possible before using any pain based method on my dog.
I have a barker… he is obnoxious.

The only way that works for him is ignore the barking and praise the silence. When dogs bark, people pay attention. We yell at them, go to them to quiet them or even pacify them. When they are quiet, they are ignored.
Add the fact that a dog likes attention, and you have a reason to bark!
When your dog is quiet, go to your dog and pay attention to it. Lots of attention. If your dog is barking, give a quick ****** of water and walk away with no words or eye contact. As soon as the barking stops, rush in with a treat and praise and play and enjoy the pup. The important thing is timing. Spray in mid bark. Come in only in quiet. If there is a bark as you are coming in, turn immediately in the bark and walk away again.

Hope this helps and you don’t need to put that nasty collar on your dog.

Dog Collars And Leashes

There are better ways to disipline your dog other than shocking it. Iassume your Mom bought it because the dog barks alot. You need to distract the dog from what’s making it bark. Try shaking a soda can with a few pennies in it the next time it starts barking, or ****** it with a water bottle. Then comes the distraction, give the dog a ball that holds treats inside of it. Kong is a good brand. I hope this helped.
