Shopping For Dog Training Collars

Choosing from amongst all of the several dog training collars available is often confusing however it doesn't need to be. To be able to pick the best training collar for your dog, there are some things you should keep in mind. Training collars should be used to teach, control and protect your dog. They must never be utilized as a method of punishment or to harm your dog.

Hallie asked:

My dad used one on our dog dana. She is the most disiplined dog I know! I don't think she responds out of fear, because she doesn't wear the collar anymore.

Dog Collars And Leads

Selection of the best kind of dog training collar for ones personal training objectives is just the first step. Additionally you must make sure it is the correct size and that you understand the way to use it the right way. Even the very best collar may not be appropriate when it is not employed properly.

Varieties of Dog Training Collars

Dog training collars include prong collars, head halters, choke collars, electronic collars. Dog harnesses and standard pet collars work fine for their designed purpose, but are not regarded as "training collars" and so are not included here.

Prong collars possess the appearance of some thing out of a middle ages torture chamber that could be very unpleasant. Used properly, they are quite humane. Prong dog training collars were originally made up of metal prongs linked to one another in chain fashion. These days they are also offered made from plastic which is preferred by many. These kinds of collars control the dog by slightly "pinching" the neck when the handler pulls on the lead. If utilized over aggressively, they can cause pain so care is needed.

Head halters such as the Haiti and Gentle Leader halters resemble and operate in a fashion similar to harnesses intended for horses. They operate by directing the dogs' path. The dogs' body naturally follows the head and a harness does a remarkably good job of controlling the head. Although they might look to be excessively restrictive, the dog quickly becomes accustomed to them. They are particularly helpful in controlling aggressive dogs.

Choke collars remain popular and are also recommended for use in many 4H dog training programs despite the controversy surrounding their use. Utilized properly, they are acceptable dog training collars, but they are easy to misuse. If they are placed on the dog improperly, if links become twisted or if too much force is used by the handler, they can, without a doubt, become tools of torture. Personally, I discontinued using choke collars long ago and will never go back to them. There are so many much better dog training collars available.

Electronic dog collars are made to give the dog a slight shock upon command from the handler. The severeness can be fine-tuned from a minor buzz or tingle to get the dogs' attention to a more severe jolt. These should never be used on small or timid dogs and only after discussion of your situation with a professional trainer. Shock collars can easily harm your dog if utilized carelessly.

Whatever your individual needs, you will find the right collar from the broad range of dog training collars available on the internet. Spend a couple of minutes to scan our site and turn your problematic dog into a pleasant, well behaved companion.

sshhhhh… don’t let people know that they are just a tool that when used properly can result in a well-trained dog (congrats to your dad, btw).

Edit: I use other tools first.. but like anything, you use the tool that gets the job done, and for some dogs bribing with cookies just doesn’t work.

They are an excellent training tool, as long as people know how to use them properly.

Good training tool if it is needed. Those who say it is cruel are misinformed. If you put one on and shocked yourself, you’d see they aren’t cruel. It does just what the name says, it SHOCKS your dog, it startles the dog and stops them from doing whatever behavior that initiated the shock.

Shock collars are a form of aversion training that can be very effective for stopping behaviors. Invisible fences are one example. If used properly and with very specific goals in mind, by an experienced and kind trainer, they serve a purpose. Most behaviors however can be taught without a shock collar. Too many bad trainers resort to shock collars to compensate for their own inability to adequately teach a dog a new behavior. Any dog that is fearful or shy should never be shocked.

It depends on which kind of “shock” collar you mean. Invisible Fence..is fine, although not effective for certain dogs. Anti-bark-I prefer the citronella spray. Remote training collar- should only be used by someone experienced and honestly I think you should have to be certified. Remote trainers are humane as long as the person in charge of the remote is responsible and uses common sense.

I see shock collars as a last resort training tool used by people who are trained to use it. It should be recomended by a trainer or vet. It should only be used in some situations not all the time. Once the dog has learned these new behaviors the collar should stop being used. The amount of shock should be apropriate for the dogs size and monitred. The dog should be monitred when wearing the shock collar.
My bottom line
As a last resort training tool used under controlled circumstances the shock collar can be a useful training tool.

I was always a mis-believer of these until I had my current dogs. After two years of working with my dogs, I installed the invisible fence along my current chain linked fence. All three of my dogs have been shocked 1 or 2 times and have not attempted to leave the yard again. They no longer wear the collar and stay within the yard. I did test each collar on my arm before I’d use them on the dogs.
