Dog Collars And Leashes

Selection of the best type of dog training collar for ones personal training goals is only the first step. In addition, you need to make sure it's the right size and that you understand how to utilize it the right way. Even the very best collar may not be suitable if it's not used correctly.

Kinds of Dog Training Collars

Dog training collars include prong collars, head halters, choke collars, electronic collars. Dog harnesses and standard dog collars work fine for their intended purpose, but are not regarded as "training collars" thus won't be covered in this article.

Prong collars have the look of a thing out of a middle ages torture chamber that could be pretty unpleasant. Used properly, they are pretty humane. Prong dog training collars were originally constructed from metal prongs linked to one another in chain fashion. Nowadays they're also available made out of plastic which is recommended by many. These types of collars control your dog by means of slightly "pinching" the neck when the handler pulls on the lead. If utilized over aggressively, they will injure so caution is needed.

Head halters like the Haiti and Gentle Leader halters resemble and operate in a fashion similar to harnesses intended for horses. They operate by guiding the dogs' path. The dogs' body naturally follows the head and a harness does an exceptionally good job of controlling the head. Even though they may look to be overly restrictive, the dog easily becomes used to them. They are particularly effective in controlling aggressive dogs.

Choke collars remain popular and are recommended for use in many 4H dog training programs regardless of the controversy around their use. Used the right way, they are acceptable dog training collars, but they are easy to misuse. If they are placed on the dog incorrectly, if links come to be twisted or if excessive pressure is used by the handler, they can, in fact, become devices of torture. Personally, I ceased using choke collars years ago and will never return to them. You will find many much better dog training collars out there.

Electronic dog collars are designed to give the dog a small zap upon command from the handler. The severeness can be tweaked from a slight buzz or tingle to get the dogs' attention to a more severe jolt. These should never be used on small or timid dogs and only subsequent to discussion of your situation with a reliable dog trainer. Shock collars can potentially cause harm to your dog if used carelessly.

Whatever your individual needs, you'll find the ideal collar from the wide range of dog training collars available on the internet. Spend a few momemts to search our site and turn your challenging dog into a fantastic, nicely behaved partner.

it doesn’t….. your dog makes associations based on behavior of you. A collar doesn’t mean anything……its behavior of you, and what you let the dog do……

If your using a collar and lead the help train her still, leave it on. It’s easier to grab a collar for control. Also if that is her only Id no chip or tattoo, I’d leave it on. It’s not hurting her and they get use to it much like people do a necklace or ring. If it’s creating a problem get her Id another way before leaving

It shouldnt matter at all. I take all 4 of my dogs collars off every now and then to clean the collars when they get dirty. They still act the same as if it was on.

Dog Collars And Leads

None of my dogs have ever worn their collars inside the house, and I don’t know of any dogs who do, either. I don’t see the point in it, and not wearing it certainly doesn’t make them see you as less dominant. That kind of reasoning makes very little sense. She’s not going to associate the collar with you being the leader, so it’s pointless.

I like to take their collars off when they are in the house and sometimes if play gets to ruff. That way they dont get caught on anything.

Wearing a collar doesnt have much to do with dominance so it wont matter to the dog. The dog will most likely appreciate the collar being off.

Unless it is a magic collar simply wearing it will not make your dog think you are in control. Its your attitude that makes you a pack leader. If you train your dog it does not matter what it has or does not have on it will listen to you.If you need the collar so you can make a quick grab to make a correction,by now your dog is aware your gonna grab it and dodge your action. If that is the case then you need a drag line on, inside the house.Tilks Mom

Wearing a collar is a safety issue. I have been doing dog rescue for years and one of the saddest situations in the world is when I find or come across a dog who has no collar or a collar without a tag. I know we are all soooo careful with our babies and want to believe our pets can’t get out, but unexpected things do happen. I urge you to put a collar and tag on your dog and keep it on at all times. If you don’t, at least get your pet microchipped. Many animal shelters and humane societies do this at a reduced cost. In some states, stray animals can be euthanized 24 hours after they’re picked up if they have no ID. P.S. If you live somewhere that experiences natural disasters, take a good photo of you and your pet together and email it to a friend who lives in another state. You can scan your pet’s vaccine papers and email them also. This is particularly important if your pet is not microchipped. I truly couldn’t sleep at night if any of my pets weren’t microchipped.

Makes no difference. My dogs only got their collars on before they went for walkies.
